Prepping Pillars 3 & 4 - Shelter and Fire
Your home is your primary shelter, but what do you have if it burns down, is destroyed in an earthquake, damaged in a storm? Do you have the skills and the materials to repair it? If not, do you have something else that you can set up to protect yourself and your family from the elements? In an extended SHTF event, how long will it be before your camp stove and your lighter have used up all their fuel? The ability to build and light a fire is important for warmth, to cook and to boil water to make it safe to drink, for light, protection, signaling, medical/surgical (sterilizing equipment or for cauterizing wounds), forging metals etc.
The Poor Man's Guide to Survival Gear
As the author points out, obviously an entire book could be written on this subject, which is a task beyond the scope of this article. The purpose of this item is to give those with financial difficulty a foothold on prepping without added pain. It is meant to be a starting point, not a compendium.
Wilderness Survival
Advances in the development of outdoor clothing, equipment, emergency food and techniques have been growing rapidly in recent years. However, experience is the best teacher in any outdoor situation and your reaction in a wilderness survival situation depends on your education. Always keep in mind that it can happen to you. Those who are mentally and physically prepared to survive are more likely to do so. To deal with an emergency situation one must be able to make decisions, improvise and remain calm.
