Where there is no Doctor

This classic manual has been described as perhaps the most widely-used health care manual in the world. The comprehensive (494 pages) handbook was written primarily for those who live in places where there is no doctor available. Unfortunately, soon that may include us. The book provides practical, easily understood information on how to diagnose, treat, and prevent common diseases. Special attention is focused on nutrition, infection and disease prevention, and diagnostic techniques as primary ways to prevent and treat health problems.

Where there is no Dentist

Community health workers, educators and individuals from around the world use this 240-page manual to help people care for their teeth and gums. From preventing and treating common dental problems to making low-cost equipment, this title covers essential topics in oral health and hygiene.

Survival & Austere Medicine

Author's description: "There are very few books aimed at the 'Practicing Medicine after the End of the World As We Know It' market. So we hope this book fills a void. We also hope it will be useful for those people delivering health care in remote or austere environments. It is not designed as a 'how to do x' reference – although there is some of that. There are plenty of books which tell you how to practice medicine. It is designed to provide some answers to commonly asked questions relating to survival/preparedness medicine and to provide relevant information not commonly found in traditional texts or direct you to that information."

Everyday and Disaster Medicine Guidebook

Author's description: "The brief guide to survival medicine, including the methods, tricks and processes for every step. The skill that we will bemoan the lack of most often in the aftermath of a huge disaster is, in fact, the ability to administer medicine and first aid. We cannot cover every single medical possibility and we cannot replace years of study as a medical student, but we can prepare you for the most likely injuries and illnesses you will face in either a small scale disaster or the collapse of society altogether. This book will specifically cover the problems that are most likely in the aftermath and the solutions that are most likely to be available to you. It won’t make you a doctor – but it will make you a lifesaver."

Grow your own Medicine - UPDATED

The majority of drugs used by the New Zealand public come from China, India or the USA. We are currently living in a time of global unrest. Any of these factors becoming critical could mean that the pharmaceutical medications on which so many of us rely may no longer be shipped to New Zealand. It makes sense therefore to look to herbal medicines as a solution to the problem of supply, demand and rising prices of pharmaceutical products, where possible. Many herbs with medicinal properties can be easily grown in your own back yard.

We are very pleased to be able to offer this NZ-written, 13-page printable reference, courtesy of the HB Prepper - Emergency Preparedness website.

The Complete Handbook of Nature Cures

According to the introduction to this 265-page book, " Nature cure is a constructive method of treatment which aims at removing the basic cause of disease through the rational use of the elements freely available in nature. It is not only a system of healing, but also a way of life, in tune with the internal vital forces or natural elements comprising the human body. It is a complete revolution in the art and science of living."

Inspiration (Mental Health)

Being a long-term prepper and, in the view of many, probably also a misinformed "conspiracy theorist", can become taxing emotionally as well as physically.

Below, in no particular order, are several downloadable (& printable) inspirational passages which may help you weather the turmoil when the going gets tough.

Desiderata

Desiderata has been described as "a concise but truly inspiring reminder to strive for the high ideals. It reminds us to treat others kindly, to accept who they are and to be gentle with ourselves. Desiderata is a wonderfully uplifting poem. It is short and simple but magnificently powerful. The poem can be a wonderful companion that guides you through times of hardship and self-doubt. It can aid you in becoming more accepting of the difficult challenge – or person – you’re confronted with. In doing so, Desiderata can greatly help you to find ways of patiently overcoming these difficulties."

Despite the attribution concerning old St Paul's church at the bottom of this document, it was in fact written early last century by Max Ehrmann.

Our Sacred Earth

In 1854, the “Great White Chief” in Washington made an offer for a large area of Indian land, and promised a ”reservation” for the Indian people.

Chief Seattle’s reply has been described as the most beautiful and profound statement on the environment ever made.

The Prophet

The Prophet is a collection of poetic essays that are philosophical, spiritual, and, above all, inspirational.

Kahlil Gibran’s musings are divided into twenty-eight chapters covering such sprawling topics as love, marriage, children, giving, eating and drinking, work, joy and sorrow, housing, clothes, buying and selling, crime and punishment, laws, freedom, reason and passion, pain, self-knowledge, teaching, friendship, talking, time, good and evil, prayer, pleasure, beauty, religion, and death.

Since it was published in 1923, The Prophet has never been out of print.

I have a Dream

Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968) was an American Baptist minister and activist who was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement. He worked to end racial discrimination against African Americans throughout his life.

King delivered his iconic I Have a Dream speech to over 250,000 people from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963. In this speech, King discusses racial inequality in America and his hopes for African Americans’ civil rights.

If - Rudyard Kipling

If you can stay calm when everyone around you is panicking and holding you responsible for their panic; if you can be confident even when no one trusts you, while still taking other people's concerns into consideration; if you can be patient; if you can avoid lying even when people lie about you; if you can not hate anyone even when they hate you; if you can be virtuous in these ways, but still not think too highly of yourself ...

This poem, published three years after he won the Nobel Prize, encapsulates the lessons Kipling learned and considered to be the keys to his success. Part of it is engraved on the entrance to Wimbledon to remind players of what it is that makes a man person.

Colloidal Silver

"Colloidal Silver is the most powerful, natural, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-parasite and body-normalising substance ever discovered and used in medicine. It is the most powerful all-purpose antibiotic and healer ever discovered.

In laboratory tests, at just five parts per million, single-celled organisms such as bacteria, fungus and viruses are killed in just four or five minutes in its presence. Dr Henry Crooks in his book 'Use of Colloids in Health and Disease' states, There is no microbe known that is not killed by Colloidal Silver in six minutes or less, in a dilution as little as five parts per million.

It is the cheapest antibiotic to use and make. It acts against some 650 pathogens in one operation, with no side effects whatsoever."
